Although the client’s name suggests otherwise, perhaps our most permanent structure to date is the podium, bar and roof terrace that we designed for their eco-resort in IJmuiden.

The challenge was to bring life to the rugged aesthetic of the space, and create a layer of architecture extending outwards from the iconic Domestikator sculpture from Atelier van Lieshout. Our architectural intervention is now the central hub of the resort, constructed entirely from second-life materials and repurposed furniture.

We took inspiration from the pitched-roof forms of the on-site tiny houses. A modular timber frame structure is cross-braced with steel cabling. This creates elevated platforms extending outwards from the sculpture with a drawbridge and stilted outlook posts. Steel sherpa connectors allow for complete demountability. In that sense, its permanence is still flexible ;-)
